A local organization is helping Vermonters in need as Thanksgiving approaches.

BROC Community Action in Rutland has been stocking up on 400 turkeys this year, with the goal to help as many families as possible to have a proper Thanksgiving meal.

NBC5 visited the nonprofit on Monday, when the General Electric Women’s Network donated 40 turkeys and a check for $1,000 to help with the mission.

“It’s so important that that we lift up those in need, and feeding people, especially at the holidays, is one way to restore that self esteem,” said Tom Donahue, the CEO of BROC Community Action. “And this is making sure that everyone has food around their tables at Thanksgiving.”

Those who qualify for food assistance will be provided with a turkey ticket to redeem before the holiday.
